Eleanor M. Check RN

Eleanor M. Check RN

Eleanor M. Check RN, age 76, of Trumbull, died peacefully with her family by her side on January 21, 2016 at Bridgeport Hospital after a brave and courageous battle. For 6 months she worked long and hard while rehabilitating an orthopedic injury before her recovery was interrupted with an acute respiratory illness. Despite being so ill and in pain she remained as beautiful and perfect as she will always be. Ultimately she always believed and trusted in God’s will: unafraid, with grace and dignity she would leave. During this time, her family was proudly and tirelessly there to assuage the feeling of being away from home, less active and unable to work.

Eleanor Veres was born and raised in Bridgeport, CT to parents of Hungarian descent and was a Trumbull resident for the past 49 years. She proudly graduated from the Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing in June of 1960 and her nursing career spans a lifetime. After graduation she worked in the Intensive Care Unit at Bridgeport Hospital and married the love of her life, Raymond R. Check (aka Vin Roberts) a noted on-air radio personality at WABC in NYC and several local radio stations, most notably WICC in Bridgeport, CT. Her nursing career was interrupted to raise a family and during that time she obtained a brokers license to sell real estate, briefly at Town Line Agency in Trumbull, and later for many years with Elmer R. Craw Real Estate in Trumbull.

She resumed her nursing career in 1980 and returned to work in the Bridgeport Hospital Emergency Room for 10 years and on Schine 9 for several years thereafter. The past 10 years she had been working as a Nursing Supervisor, most recently at Apple Rehab Shelton Lakes in Shelton, CT where she formed several lasting friendships.

A true nurse till the end, she constantly cared for others, especially her family- always present, supportive, and defined what it meant to be thoughtful.

Special memories include being awake at night when she came home after completing her evening shift in the Emergency Room, eager to share her exciting stories about being in the trauma room, about saving a life, or the responsibility of being assigned the charge nurse for her shift as she loved teaching others. Intuitive and bright, she was an exceptionally gifted nurse and received numerous commendations throughout her career.

Professional affiliations include the Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, the American Nurses Association, The Greater Bridgeport Board of Realtors, the Beardsley Zoological Society, and the Connecticut Humane Society.

Eleanor and her husband Raymond shared a special love and concern for animals- especially those without shelter or food. The door in the back of their garage was always kept ajar for any animal looking for shelter or to be fed. And on those occasions when a special dog without a home or a starving kitten would appear and choose to stay they welcomed them inside to their new forever home. There were many, including a dog seeking shelter from the pouring rain, a cat looking for a safe place to birth her kittens and another, weak and nearly frozen in the cold of winter would all find a forever home as members of our family.  Most recently, the role she played in helping to save “Benny”, an adult miniature poodle from a high-kill shelter in LA, was paramount and proved to be the most wonderful and joyous rescue of all.

She enjoyed and looked forward to her routine on Saturdays and touched many lives, making wonderful friends. Ellie was loved by all who knew her and her presence will be sorely missed forevermore.

She taught us much, particularly about perseverance, spirituality, and faith. She supported us in all of our endeavors and interests and instilled in us the value of our family traditions, especially around the holidays, which we will always cherish and honor her by continuing them forever.

A handmade birthday card she recently gave to her son Joseph read, “It’s been a tough 2 years and a very long road so far. Where it’s leading to I don’t know, but I guess all we could do is follow it.” She did, and so shall we. It’s how she lived her life.

She was the beloved daughter of the late Joseph A. Veres and Margaret Csoszor-Veres, predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years Raymond R. Check, and several aunts & uncles: Isabel Csoszor-Millemaci of Bridgeport, Gabor, Laszlo, Julian, and Louis Csoszor all of Hungary, and Larry Veres, Helen Pritz, Betty Massey, and Augusta Estep, all of California.

She is survived by her devoted children Joseph R. Check MD of Trumbull and Tiffany L. Check-Richards and her husband Darren Richards of Milford, her sister-in-law Frances A. Check of Bridgeport, cousin Larry Veres and his wife Shelley of California, cousin BJ Veres-Long of California, cousin May Dixon of Utah and several second cousins in Utah and California.

Family and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main Street Trumbull, CT. Interment to follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 1056 Daniels Farm Road, Trumbull, CT. Friends may call on Friday, January 29, 2016 from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Rd. Trumbull, CT.

Ellie wished for memorial contributions to be made in her name to The Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd., Newington, Connecticut. 06111; 800-452-0114, ext. 6301; cthumane.org.
